Combat Deep Dive: Perfect Block, Dodge & Riposte

Coen's combat is built on matching direction, not just timing — attacks and blocks come from four sides, and reading which one is coming matters more than reflexes alone. Here's how the four-directional system works, and how Perfect Block, Perfect Dodge, and Perfect Riposte turn good reads into free damage.

This guide reflects what's known shortly after launch (September 3, 2026) and focuses on Story/Fair/Challenging-difficulty behavior unless noted. We'll refine timing details as we log more hours on Duelist.

The four-directional system

Every attack and every block has a direction — up, down, left, or right — and they have to match. Holding a generic guard button does very little here; you need to input the block that corresponds to the direction the swing is actually coming from, which means watching the enemy's wind-up rather than just their proximity.

Block/attack directions — input has to match the incoming swing's side

Perfect Block: free defense with a payoff

A regular directional block still costs stamina and just soaks the hit. A Perfect Block — a directional block timed right before the attack actually connects — costs no stamina at all and leaves the enemy briefly exposed, with any attack you land during that window guaranteed to hit.

Perfect Block timing — the window sits right before the attack connects. Early costs stamina, perfect is free and exposes the enemy, late means you get hit.

DifficultyTiming cue
Story / Fair / ChallengingA shield indicator shifts color as the window opens, giving you a visual cue for when to input the block
DuelistNo visual indicator — you're reading the enemy's attack animation directly

Perfect Dodge: the stamina-free alternative

Instead of blocking, you can dodge toward an incoming attack at the last possible moment. Get the timing right and it costs no stamina and opens the same kind of counter window a Perfect Block does — useful against attacks that are awkward to block from your current position, or when you'd rather reposition than trade.

Perfect Riposte: turning a block into a crit

Perfect Riposte is a Swordmastery perk that sits behind Omniblock in the tree. Land a Perfect Block and a red directional indicator appears on the lock-on HUD — attack in that critical direction and it lands as a critical hit instead of a normal follow-up.

Tier 1Unlocks Perfect Riposte itself
Tier 2+10% damage on Perfect Riposte hits
Tier 3Perfect Riposte can now trigger after a Perfect Dodge, not just a Perfect Block
Tier 4An additional +20% damage on top

Omniblock: cutting the tax on defense

Omniblock reduces the stamina cost of blocking regardless of direction, and it's the perk Perfect Riposte is gated behind. Prioritizing it early makes the whole defensive loop cheaper to lean on while you're still building up the reflexes for consistent Perfect Blocks.

Managing stamina under pressure

Fighting multiple enemies at once

Against groups, precisely aiming a Perfect Riposte at one enemy's critical direction isn't always practical. Throwing out attacks across different directions rather than repeating one input tends to land more hits inside your counter windows when several enemies are swinging from different sides at once — treat 1v1 precision and group scrapping as two different combat modes rather than the same loop.

Practical takeaway: get comfortable with directional blocking before chasing Perfect Riposte damage — Omniblock and consistent Perfect Blocks make the defensive loop nearly free, and the crits come naturally once the reads do.

Frequently asked questions

Does a Perfect Block cost stamina?
No — a regular directional block does, but a correctly timed Perfect Block costs none and leaves the enemy briefly open to a guaranteed hit.

Do all difficulties show a Perfect Block timing cue?
No. Story, Fair, and Challenging show a color-shifting indicator; Duelist removes it and requires reading enemy animations directly.

Can Perfect Riposte trigger after a Perfect Dodge?
Only from Tier 3 of the Perfect Riposte perk onward — before that, it only triggers after a Perfect Block.
